Day 5 · January 5
A devotional for today
Today’s readings
- Old Testament: GENESIS 11:1-13:4
- New Testament: MATTHEW 5:1-26
- Psalm: PSALM 5:1-12
- Proverb: PROVERBS 1:24-28
Old Testament
Humanity gathers at Babel to make a name for itself, but God scatters proud ambition. He then calls Abram out of idolatry, promising land, blessing, and a worldwide mission through his offspring.
New Testament
Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount with kingdom blessings, calling his people to be salt and light and to practice a righteousness deeper than outward religion. He moves from murder to anger and from ritual to reconciliation.
Psalm
David brings his desires, fears, and expectation before God each morning. The Lord is holy, welcomes the upright, and shields his people with favor.
Proverb
Wisdom warns that those who reject her call will eventually face the consequences of their refusal. Delay in listening to God is never neutral.
Discover
Jesus is the true seed of Abraham through whom all nations are blessed. He also embodies the righteousness he commands and forms a people who display God’s kingdom in the world.
Reflect
The contrast is sharp: Babel seeks a name by pride; Abram receives a name by grace. God’s kingdom is built not by self-exaltation but by surrendered obedience.

Which Beatitude grips your heart most today?
Where do you need reconciliation instead of religious performance?
Prayer
God of grace, call me away from self-made towers and into obedient faith. Make me a witness to the blessing found in Christ.
